Here’s a poem that I wrote in 2016, while hanging out with the always-inspiring Travel by Yes crew.
Another One (Just Because)
by Nikki Starcat Shields
It’s like I’m having this
Long conversation
With myself -
This whole sweet crazy life
Is one deep talk
With what moves me.
“Why did this happen?”
I often inquire.
“Because,” is the cryptic
Yet oddly satisfying
Reply.
“What’s next?”
I ask.
“Just watch!”
I reply.
The observer,
The actor,
We blur,
Becoming one
Dancing Writing Eating Loving
Then spin apart again,
More words form questions -
“Why did he say that?”
“Why does she do this?”
“Because.”
Just because.
No real reason.
I attribute meanings
To the events,
Then change the definitions
On a whim.
We’re making it up
We’re all just making it up
As we go along
Even those who deny it -
Especially them.
Why are we here?
What is the meaning?
Why do I feel everything
So powerfully?
Because.
Because, because, because.
