Here’s another poem from 2016, when I was attending Play Church.
True Story 2
by Nikki Starcat Shields
I step out onto the crunchy-leaf path,
Seeking a reverie.
Crisp ocean-touched air
Early-spring sun, trying too hard.
My nose is running
My eyes well up
From the raw wind’s caresses.
My troubled friend approaches -
Young blond boy
In elephant garb,
Solemn-faced,
Spits a shiny pink plastic gem
Onto the mud at my feet
And speaks one word -
“Heart.”
He shuffles away.
I pick up the gem,
Saliva-covered, glistening,
Cradle it in my cold hands.
The words all drop away.
My mind hushes.
My heart beats.
I move into the maze,
Stepping carefully,
Looking for a tree,
To climb and cuddle
As the pseudo-wolves
Howl from the nearby marsh
And joy moves in.
